Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga World Premiere at the 77th Festival de Cannes

Nine years since the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, Australian filmmaker George Miller returns to the spotlight with the latest installment of his renowned saga, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Joining Miller are the film’s stars including Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Burke, for an Out of Competition Gala session at the Grand Théâtre Lumière in the Palais des Festivals on Wednesday, May 15th.

Spanning almost five decades and five episodes, beginning with Mad Max in 1979, George Miller has crafted a cathartic myth exploring societal and environmental collapse. Mad Max serves as a chronicle of this chaos, deftly weaving genre conventions to interrogate these themes, initially visionary and now painfully relevant. Originally filmed in the Australian Outback, this reimagined ‘Western on wheels’ paints a dystopian world where speed and movement symbolize both vitality and the looming specter of death due to dwindling resources, delivering an adrenaline rush rarely matched on the silver screen.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the latest episode. It returns to the origins of Furiosa, the new saga-heroine who appeared in Mad Max: Fury Road, rewarded with several Oscars. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy plays the young Furiosa, trying to return home, despite numerous hostile armed gangs.

George Miller, the versatile and incomparable filmmaker, known for seamlessly transitioning from post-apocalyptic dramas to family-friendly fare such as Babe (1995) and Happy Feet (2006), previously served as a Cannes Film Festival jury member twice before assuming the role of President for its 69th edition in 2016.

In 2022, he presented Three Thousand Years of Longing with Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, Out of Competition.
