Monaco Illuminates the Prince’s Palace and Yacht Club in Blue for World Maritime Day

On September 26, 2024, the Prince’s Palace and Yacht Club of Monaco will shine in blue as the Principality joins the global celebration of World Maritime Day. Organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), this annual event is dedicated to raising awareness of the maritime industry’s crucial role and the challenges it faces, with this year’s theme being “Navigating the future: safety first!”

A Celebration of Maritime Safety and Security

World Maritime Day 2024 holds special significance as it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), a landmark agreement focused on maritime safety. The theme, “Navigating the future: safety first!” reflects the IMO’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and security of maritime operations while also protecting the marine environment.

As part of the day’s activities, the IMO will host a symposium in partnership with the World Meteorological Organization, centering on the topic of extreme maritime weather—a critical issue for the safety of seafarers and vessels alike. Monaco, a proud Member State of the IMO, will actively participate in this important discussion, demonstrating its dedication to addressing the challenges of maritime safety and environmental protection.

Lighting Up Monaco in Blue

In a stunning display of solidarity with the maritime community, the Prince’s Palace and the Yacht Club of Monaco will be illuminated in blue, aligning with the IMO’s invitation to Member States, government bodies, and organizations worldwide to light up iconic buildings, ports, and ships. This visual tribute not only symbolizes Monaco’s commitment to the maritime industry but also serves as a reminder of the significant role that maritime transport plays in our everyday lives.

Promoting Awareness of the Maritime Industry

Since 2021, the IMO has encouraged its Member States to participate in this annual lighting tradition to promote the year’s World Maritime Day theme. By lighting up these landmarks in blue, the Principality of Monaco aims to draw public attention to the vital role that maritime transport plays in global trade, economy, and communication, while also emphasizing the importance of safety, security, and environmental stewardship in the industry.
