Solar Eclipse to Be Visible in Monaco on 12 August: How to Watch It Safely

Monaco and the Alpes-Maritimes are set to witness a solar eclipse on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, with the phenomenon expected to be visible between approximately 7:20 p.m. and 9:10 p.m.

Peak visibility in Monaco and across the Alpes-Maritimes is expected at around 8:25 p.m., offering residents and visitors an opportunity to observe one of the summer’s most anticipated celestial events.

However, health authorities are reminding the public that observing a solar eclipse requires strict precautions to protect the eyes.

Special Eclipse Glasses Are Essential

Looking directly at the sun with the naked eye — even for only a few seconds — can cause serious and potentially irreversible damage to the retina, with the risk of permanent vision loss.

The eclipse should therefore only be viewed through special-purpose solar viewing glasses bearing the CE marking and complying with the ISO 12312-2 safety standard. Appropriate glasses can be purchased from opticians, pharmacies and specialist retailers.

Regular sunglasses are not suitable for viewing a solar eclipse, regardless of how dark their lenses may appear, and do not provide sufficient protection against the intensity of direct sunlight.

Parents and caregivers are also advised to pay particular attention to children during the eclipse and ensure that appropriate eye protection is worn at all times when looking towards the sun.

What to Do If You Experience Vision Problems

Anyone who experiences unusual visual symptoms after observing the eclipse should seek medical advice promptly. Warning signs can include persistent blurred or reduced vision or the appearance of a dark spot in the field of vision.

In such cases, consultation with an ophthalmologist is strongly recommended.

With the right protective equipment and precautions, the 12 August solar eclipse promises to offer a remarkable sight over Monaco and the French Riviera as the sun approaches the Mediterranean horizon.
