The FIGHT AIDS CUP 2024: A Celebration of Football, Solidarity and Achievements
The highly anticipated FIGHT AIDS CUP is making its return for the fourth edition, promising an evening of football, entertainment, and support for a vital cause. Scheduled for January 22nd, this traditional gala match brings together the BARBAGIUANS and CIRQUE FC at the Stade Louis II, featuring iconic figures from the global football scene. Beyond the celebration of sportsmanship, this year’s event serves as a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival.
Louis Ducruet, President of Barbagiuans de Monaco, expresses his ambitious vision for this edition. “We want this edition, where multiple anniversaries will be celebrated, to remain in people’s memories.” Over the years, the FIGHT AIDS CUP has gained significant popularity, setting records in sponsorship and donations for the cause of FIGHT AIDS MONACO.
The captain of the Barbagiuans shares his enthusiasm, eagerly looking forward to “sharing magical moments on the field again, in the company of legends from international football.” The event aims to raise awareness and funds for the fight against HIV, the disease that still affected 39 million people worldwide in 2022.
H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie’s Dedicated Advocacy
H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie has been a stalwart ambassador in the fight against HIV, leading FIGHT AIDS MONACO for two decades. Her dedication has played a pivotal role in placing the global battle against HIV at the forefront of Monaco’s concerns. H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie emphasizes the ongoing need for awareness: “We constantly need to make people understand that they are not immune. With the evolution of research, treatments, and testing, the means to eradicate the spread of the epidemic are available. We must encourage people to do what is necessary.”
She expresses her gratitude to her son, Louis Ducruet, for initiating the FIGHT AIDS CUP, stating, “I will never thank Louis enough for this magnificent initiative.”
The traditional gala match existed well before the creation of the FIGHT AIDS CUP. For more than a decade, H.S.H. Prince Albert II’s team competed against a lineup comprised of prominent figures from the festival, on the day of relaxation (Monday). This amicable gathering within the privacy of the princely family turned into an exceptional event in 2020—a transformation deemed “necessary” by the princess, recognizing the untapped potential. “The time had come to revive this historical part and hand over the reins to the younger generation. We needed to explore new ideas, objectives… and the success achieved is truly gratifying. I am thrilled with this evolution.”
The initiation of the event signifies Louis Ducruet’s unwavering commitment since assuming the presidency of Barbagiuans de Monaco. A man driven by convictions and visionary projects, he promptly sought to rejuvenate the occasion by enticing renowned football legends to participate in both teams—a strategy aimed at amplifying public interest and introducing new, more impactful challenges. In 2020, the nephew of Prince Albert II expressed, “I wanted to support my mother by trying to raise funds for FIGHT AIDS MONACO. It was important to contribute in an area I know well, football.”
Four editions later, H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie joyously acknowledges the direct positive impacts that the FIGHT AIDS CUP has brought to her association.“It is an immense source of pride for me to witness my son’s dedication to causes that resonate deeply with me. His idea was not only brilliant but also instrumental for FIGHT AIDS MONACO,” declares the sovereign’s sister before extending her sentiments. “Beyond the substantial financial support, the initiative aims to consistently spotlight the ongoing battle. This is achieved through a sports-driven and convivial evening. I can never thank Louis enough for this remarkable undertaking…”
The FIGHT AIDS CUP has evolved over the years, gaining recognition for its professionalism and the growing number of spectators. H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie notes its seamless integration into the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival, a testament to shared values of solidarity.
A Grand Tribute and New Legends
Louis Ducruet unveils some unique aspects of the 2024 edition. Once again, the FIGHT AIDS CUP will offer the public its share of surprises and specific features. In a year where activities in the principality are part of the centenary of Prince Rainier III, it was inconceivable for Louis Ducruet not to use the event to pay a new tribute to his grandfather, who passed away in 2005. Very concerned about these commemorations, the president of Barbagiuans reveals the creation of a “collector’s jersey” that the players of both teams will wear during the match. A way to “celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the Builder Prince and remember the passion he had for football and AS Monaco.”
The 20th anniversary of FIGHT AIDS MONACO and the 50th anniversary of the Monte-Carlo International Circus Festival will also be highlighted.
The 2024 edition introduces new personalities to the FIGHT AIDS CUP, including football legends such as Philippe Mexès, and Claude Makélélé. Louis Ducruet emphasizes the importance of bringing in fresh faces to diversify the event’s appeal. He applauds the loyalty of legends who continue to support the cause.
With a third consecutive participation, Robert Pires is among the key figures of the FIGHT AIDS CUP shares his perspective, “It is always very important for me to be available when the values of solidarity are highlighted in a major sporting event. We are here to support an association… it is a mindset that suits me.” French international, 1998 World Cup champion, and Euro 2000 winner, Robert Pires does not hesitate to emphasize his “pride in representing once again the team of H.S.H. Princess Stéphanie. I am grateful for the renewed trust.”
The FIGHT AIDS CUP 2024 promises not only a remarkable sporting event but also an evening of solidarity, remembrance, and dedication to the crucial cause of combating HIV. As the centenary celebrations and milestones unfold, the Principality of Monaco stands united in support of FIGHT AIDS MONACO. The stage is set for an unforgettable experience, weaving together the threads of football, charity, and the enduring spirit of the Principality.
Tickets for attending the event are currently available on AS Monaco’s online ticketing platform or directly at the stadium.
