Explosion in Monaco Leaves Three Seriously Injured as Authorities Launch Cross-Border Investigation

Monaco is reeling after a criminal explosion left three people seriously injured on Monday evening, prompting an extensive investigation involving both Monegasque and French authorities.

The blast occurred at approximately 8:58 p.m. at the entrance of a residential building near Place des Moulins, close to the French border. Investigators believe the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device concealed inside a backpack or parcel deliberately placed at the entrance of the building. The suspect was captured on surveillance cameras fleeing toward the neighboring French town of Beausoleil, triggering a joint cross-border manhunt. The motive remains under investigation.

Three members of the same family sustained serious injuries, including two adults and a 13-year-old child, and were transported to hospitals in Nice for treatment. Local and international media have identified the adult victim as Ukrainian businessman Vadym Yermolaiev, although authorities have not officially confirmed the identities of those injured.

In an official statement issued shortly after the attack, H.S.H. Prince Albert II described the incident as “a shock for the entire Monegasque community” and condemned it as a criminal act.  “My thoughts go first to the victims, their loved ones and the residents directly affected by this odious act. Princess Charlene, my family and I wish to express to them our compassion and our unwavering support.”

The Sovereign also praised the swift response of Monaco’s emergency and public security services, commending their professionalism in securing the area and ensuring that victims received immediate medical care.

Prince Albert confirmed that, under the authority of the Government, all relevant state services have been fully mobilized and are working in close cooperation with French authorities to establish the circumstances of the attack, identify those responsible and bring them to justice as quickly as possible.

Authorities deployed significant emergency resources following the explosion, including firefighters, police officers and forensic specialists from both Monaco and France. Access points to the Principality were immediately secured while investigators examined the scene and reviewed extensive CCTV footage from both sides of the border.

Concluding his address, Prince Albert emphasized that the attack would not undermine the Principality’s commitment to security and unity. “More than ever, the Principality of Monaco will remain united and determined in the face of violence and crime. The safety of our community has always been a priority; it will remain so, whatever the threats.”

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack as the search for the suspect remains ongoing.
