In this exclusive interview with Gabriele Di Martino, we delve into the essence of his artistic journey, the influence of diverse cultures, and the exciting projects that lie ahead in 2024.

Gabriele, your journey began in the nice and picturesque city of Vercelli, Italy, not far from Milano. How did your early experiences in this little Italian town influence your passion for photography?

Vercelli’s serene beauty ignited my love for capturing moments. It was in this quiet setting that I first picked up a camera, finding inspiration in the simplicity and authenticity of everyday life and taking pictures of my closest friends. I’ve ended up in Milan, starting with the first model tests and then building my fashion portfolio. I was so young and insecure about my skills but it was a really nice journey.

Taking us back to your first steps in photography, could you share some anecdotes from the initial stages of your career? What were the first jobs that helped shape your dream in the world of photography?

Early on, I immersed myself in little events, discos and small-scale projects with local brands. These experiences were valuable in honing my skills and building the foundation for the artistic journey I’m on today, especially because I had the chance to build my first connections and a stronger personality.

Your career has taken you from the charming streets of Vercelli to the glamorous world of fashion photography, with a base in Milano but a global footprint. How has this journey unfolded for you?

It’s been a thrilling journey, marked by evolution and growth but also lots of ups and downs. Milano remains my creative hub and home right now, but my work has allowed me to travel a lot and collaborate with incredible talents and brand worldwide, especially in the vibrant atmosphere of the US. I’m so grateful for all the opportunities I had and the people I’ve met.

Beyond the lens, how do you manage the balance between your extensive travels and personal relationships?

It’s a delicate balance. Open (and strong) communication and understanding from loved ones are crucial, also if it’s not an easy thing to deal with. My closest friends and family provide a stable foundation, even when I’m constantly on the move or on the other side of the world; I always miss them a lot but I know I’m building the foundations for my future career and life so it’s absolutely worthy. The nice other side is that I’m building new friendships and connections where I go the most so, basically, I can feel like I’m home but far from home.

Are there photographers or brands that have particularly influenced your style and approach to photography?

I’ve always admired the work of Helmut Newton, Mario Testino and Steven Meisel but there’s a lot of great photographers out there. Their ability to capture emotion and tell stories through images has been a significant inspiration. As for brands, the timeless elegance of Giorgio Armani and Saint Laurent resonate with me.
