Behind the Scenes of RunwayLive: An Interview with Maren Tschinkel

Fresh from the Paris Fashion Week prêt-à-porter shows, model Maren Tschinkel gives us a peek into the real life of a runway model during one of fashion’s most hectic seasons. In this interview, Maren shares how she handles long, high-energy days, keeps her skin and hair looking flawless, and finds moments to recharge. She also reflects on her favorite moments and the thrill of stepping onto the catwalk.

TM: Fashion Week is known to be one of the busiest times in the industry. How would you describe the energy and pace of it as a model?

Maren: Fashion Week might seem very hectic and fast-paced, and it definitely is! But if everything is well-planned, it can actually have this amazing, almost electric energy. You have so many different people coming together—designers, stylists, models—all sharing the same excitement for the shows and events happening around us. It’s like a creative melting pot!

Can you walk us through what a typical day looks like for you during Fashion Week?

A typical day during Fashion Week starts early. I’ll head to the show location right away, as hair and makeup usually kick off well before the show itself. Since we models spend so much time backstage, I always bring healthy snacks to keep up my energy. After the show, if I can, I squeeze in a workout to maintain my fitness routine. Then it’s a quick turn-in for an early night, so I’m ready to be fresh for the next day!

What does your preparation process look like before Fashion Week starts? Do you do anything differently leading up to this period?

There isn’t a big shift for me leading up to Fashion Week because, as a model, I always have to be ready and well-groomed. It’s just part of the job! So, I keep my regular routines steady, making sure my skin, hair, and overall health are all on point.

How do you prepare mentally for the intensity of Fashion Week, especially when dealing with nerves or fatigue?

I like to keep things calm before and after Fashion Week. That means scheduling spa days and spending time in nature whenever possible. Outdoor activities really help me recharge. It’s the best balance for me, and it keeps my energy and mindset strong.

Can you share any special tips on how you keep your skin and hair ready for back-to-back shows, considering all the makeup and styling?

My priority is to protect my hair and skin. Every morning, I use my own heat protection spray for my hair and a good moisturizer for my skin before I head into hair and makeup. At night, I’ll apply a face mask and serum because those are the most concentrated products and really keep my skin looking its best. For my hair, I like to use a mask. Even if I can’t leave it on for too long, it gives my hair much-needed moisture beyond a simple conditioner.

What’s your diet like during Fashion Week? Do you follow any special nutrition or hydration plans to stay healthy?

I’m all about healthy eating in general, and that doesn’t change during Fashion Week. Eating nutrient-dense food is essential to keeping my skin glowing and my body healthy. Hydration is another must—I make sure to drink water throughout the day, as it’s just as important as the food I eat.

What do you do to manage stress during hectic times like Fashion Week?

I try to keep my evenings easygoing to wind down from the day. Sticking to my regular workout routine also really helps me manage stress. It’s something I look forward to, and it grounds me, even during the busiest weeks.

What is your favorite part of Fashion Week? What keeps you motivated despite the intense schedule?

My favorite part? It’s definitely stepping onto the catwalk. There’s a thrill when you first walk out, and all eyes are on you—it’s a powerful moment to shine. Plus, the camaraderie backstage is fantastic. I love seeing everyone cheering each other on. That support and shared excitement are so motivating!

Are there any memorable moments or shows that stand out for you from past Fashion Weeks?

Last year, I had the honor of walking for Adore-Me by Victoria’s Secret. It’s a show I’ll never forget. Backstage, the energy was something I’d never experienced before; everyone was genuinely excited and in the best mood. The whole team was cheering each other on, which created such a positive vibe. And the audience! So many of my friends were there, and it was such a wonderful surprise. It made the night truly unforgettable.
