Villa Belgica: A Century of Transformation and Renewal under Jean Nouvel’s Vision

Over the centuries, Villa Belgica has continuously evolved, reflecting the lifestyles and needs of each generation. As the historic headquarters of UBS Monaco since 1998, the villa now embarks on a new journey, reimagined under the guidance of renowned architect Jean Nouvel and his team at Ateliers Jean Nouvel. Here, we explore its past transformations and its latest evolution, showcasing its remarkable heritage and enduring adaptability.

A Legacy of Change: Villa Belgica’s Historical Journey

Iconic for its corner dome and Belle Époque architecture, Villa Belgica was acquired in 1925–26 by Alfred Bouvier, the Belgian consul in Monaco, who renamed it to honor his homeland. During the early 1930s, the villa underwent its first structural elevation, preserving its original dome and balustrade, though the architect behind these changes remains unknown.

Between 1956 and 1959, Monegasque architect Julien Médécin oversaw a second elevation, altering the villa’s proportions and unfortunately removing the dome. Despite this change, no significant updates to the façade appear to have taken place since the 1950s, and the villa has largely retained the aesthetics established during that period.

In 2024, the Villa Belgica once again enters a new phase, this time under the innovative direction of Jean Nouvel. His approach integrates the historical and modern, balancing the building’s architectural heritage with the evolving needs of UBS Monaco, resulting in a refined “harmony of growth.”

Nouvel’s Vision: Preserving Heritage with Modern Design

Jean Nouvel’s transformation of Villa Belgica is a historic first for Monaco, as he preserves the villa’s essence while thoughtfully incorporating contemporary design elements. Nouvel explains that his goal is to “express the differences related to uses and lived histories.” His vision includes engraved remnants of past alterations, the preserved cornice from the original villa, and the restoration of bow windows that reflect the structure’s century-old charm.

Located at 2 Avenue de Grande Bretagne, the project includes a total reconstruction and elevation, bringing Villa Belgica to a 1,636 m² surface area. Nouvel’s nuanced approach ensures that the villa’s evolution remains visible, respecting its historical essence while meeting UBS’s current needs.

Leading in Sustainability: Environmental Certifications and Commitment

Managed by the Michel Pastor Group, the Villa Belgica project is setting high standards for sustainable architecture, aiming for BREEAM Excellence and BD2M “Gold” certifications. The BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification assesses environmental performance, ensuring high levels of energy efficiency, resource management, and occupant well-being.

The BD2M (Sustainable Mediterranean Buildings of Monaco) certification, the highest recognition for sustainability in the region, underscores UBS Monaco’s commitment to environmental responsibility. With this forward-thinking project, UBS Monaco not only advances its banking services but also sets an example of sustainable business practices in Monaco.

Redefining Client Experience at UBS Monaco’s New Headquarters

With its new headquarters, UBS Monaco is elevating the client experience to new heights. Centrally located in Monaco, this project will redefine private banking standards, offering an array of amenities and a first-class service environment. The strategic move to the heart of the city enhances accessibility for clients, making Villa Belgica a premier destination for meetings and interactions.

The top three floors of the redesigned villa will host a unique dining and social experience, featuring a panoramic rooftop on the 11th floor with a 360-degree view, setting a new benchmark for hospitality in Monaco’s financial sector. Events centered around fine wine, philanthropy, and finance will be hosted throughout the year exclusively for UBS clients.
