The Fourth Edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival: A Celebration of Global Cinema

The Red Sea International Film Festival, a premier cinematic event in the Middle East, returned for its fourth edition with unparalleled ambition and grandeur. Held annually in the historic Al-Balad district of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—the festival has cemented itself as a global platform celebrating diverse voices and bold storytelling, with a focus on emerging talents from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

This year’s festival showcased over 120 films from 81 countries, attracting stars, filmmakers, and industry professionals from around the world.

The festival began with a dazzling opening ceremony, honoring some of the biggest names in global cinema. Hollywood legend Vin Diesel, British star Emily Blunt, and Indian icon Aamir Khan were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the industry.

Returning for his second year, Andrew Garfield was also a key figure at the festival, presenting his latest film alongside Florence Pugh and participating as a mentor at the Red Sea Souk, the festival’s industry platform designed to support and inspire emerging filmmakers.

Adding to the star power, Spike Lee, the legendary filmmaker and advocate for cinematic diversity, presided over the jury for this year’s awards.

In a standout moment, Michael Douglas, the Oscar-winning actor and producer, was honored with a lifetime achievement award presented by Jomana Al Rashid, chairwoman of the Red Sea Film Foundation.

The festival’s fourth edition concluded with a star-studded Closing Night and Awards Ceremony, where the winners of the prestigious Yusr Awards were announced. The ceremony also honored global icons Viola Davis and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, joining other Red Sea Honourees.

A Dynamic Lineup of Films

The festival showcased a diverse selection of films, with 16 feature films competing under the unifying theme of “Home”. The lineup also included 48 films from the New Saudi, New Cinema, Arab Shorts, and International Shorts programs, reflecting the festival’s commitment to storytelling that transcends borders and cultural boundaries.

The festival opened with The Tale of Daye’s Family, an Egyptian-Saudi co-production directed by Karim Shenawy.

One of the highlights was the closing gala screening of Johnny Depp’s second directorial venture, MODI, THREE DAYS ON THE WING OF MADNESS. A Red Sea International Film Financing project, the film delivers a whirlwind 72-hour journey through the streets of WWI-era Paris, following Italian artist Modigliani as he struggles to find a home for his art while navigating chaos, personal challenges, and critical opposition.
