Second Edition of the Ocean Space Forum in Monaco Highlights the Crucial Role of Space Technologies in Ocean Preservation

On July 2nd, the Office of Space Affairs of the Princely Government, in collaboration with the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) and Prométhée Earth Intelligence, organized the second edition of the Ocean Space Forum (OSF). This event, dedicated to showcasing space technologies and satellite observation data in the service of ocean preservation and sustainable management, took place at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco.

Thematic Focus: Road to UNOC

The theme for this year’s Forum was “Road to UNOC,” in preparation for the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in June 2025. The upcoming UNOC, co-chaired by the governments of France and Costa Rica, will be a significant event gathering over 200 Heads of State and government to discuss and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 14, which focuses on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources.

Key Discussions and Insights

The OSF brought together scientific, political, and economic leaders representing governments, institutions, and international bodies to explore crucial topics at the intersection of space and ocean sciences.

  1. Preservation of Marine Ecosystems
    • Technological advancements and innovative space solutions that contribute to the preservation of marine ecosystems were discussed. Satellite data is pivotal in monitoring the health of coral reefs, mangroves, and salt marshes, which play vital roles in carbon capture and environmental balance. Real-time observation technologies enhance habitat protection and conservation efforts.
  2. Development of the Blue Economy
    • The integration of space technologies in marine resource management opens new horizons for sustainable economic growth. Discussions emphasized the importance of monitoring fishing areas, managing marine resources, and improving maritime safety.
  3. Combating Climate Change and Its Effects on the Ocean
    • Participants highlighted the role of space technologies in collecting essential data on sea levels, ocean temperatures, and marine currents. These data are crucial for understanding the effects of climate change and developing adaptation strategies for coastal cities and vulnerable ecosystems.
  4. Conservation of Marine Resources
    • The relevance of satellite monitoring in detecting and preventing illicit activities, such as illegal fishing, which threaten marine biodiversity, was a key concern. Emphasis was placed on the necessity of international collaboration to strengthen ocean governance and protect resources for future generations.
  5. International Collaboration
    • The Forum provided a platform for international organizations and representatives from various countries to share their experiences and best practices. It demonstrated that space innovations could transcend borders and encourage global environmental protection, particularly aiding Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Looking Ahead: Towards UNOC 2025

The second edition of the OSF is a significant milestone on the path to the third UNOC, scheduled to be held in Nice from June 9-14, 2025. This event will be crucial in advancing global commitments and concrete actions for ocean sustainability. The third edition of the OSF will run in parallel with the UNOC, further integrating space solutions into discussions on crucial oceanic challenges.

In a video message at the opening of the OSF, H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince stated, “I am pleased to know you are gathered today in this iconic venue, the Oceanographic Museum. The day’s program will illustrate how space data can be a valuable instrument for the health and sustainability of the ocean.” He emphasized the significant advancements in space technologies that allow for better global understanding and real-time observation of the ocean, highlighting their critical role in achieving ambitious environmental goals.

Madame Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and Mr. Frédéric Genta, Interministerial Delegate for Attractiveness and Digital Transition, commended the commitment of the participants towards sustainable development goals. They expressed hope that the Forum would continue to foster synergy between space technologies and ocean-related challenges.

Mr. Jean-Marc Astorg, Director of Strategy at CNES, reaffirmed the importance of this synergy for a responsible planetary future, while Mr. Olivier Piepsz, President, and Mr. Giao-Minh Nguyen, co-founder and Director of Strategy & Innovation at Prométhée Earth Intelligence, stressed the need for cooperation between public and private sectors, and the involvement of civil society, to advance resilient and sustainable solutions.

The third edition of the OSF in 2025 will be an opportunity to consider an Alliance of Space Institutions for Ocean Protection, further solidifying the crucial role of space technologies in addressing global oceanic challenges.
