“The Prince’s Vision: Jacques Rueff, Minister of State for Rainier III, 1949-1950,” a New Exhibition Showcased in the Lobby of the Ministry of State

The Monaco National Archives Preparatory Team (MPAN) and the Central Records Office (SCADA), in collaboration with the Palace of Monaco Archives and the Audiovisual Institute of Monaco, present a compelling exhibition titled “The Prince’s Vision: Jacques Rueff, Minister of State for Rainier III, 1949-1950.” This exhibition, commemorating the centenary of Prince Rainier III’s birth, is on display in the lobby of the Ministry of State from November 6, 2023, to January 26, 2024.

Curated by Michaël Bloche, Director of MPAN, along with Thomas Fouilleron, Vincent Vatrican, and Audrey Bloche, the exhibition delves into the pivotal role played by Jacques Rueff, the first Minister of State appointed by Prince Rainier III in 1949. Rueff, an eminent economist and member of the Académie française, accepted Rainier’s invitation, building the foundations of Monaco’s long-term policies amid challenging circumstances.

Despite strained relations with France and a domestic crisis, Rainier III and Jacques Rueff worked together to shape Monaco’s trajectory, focusing on tourism, urban planning, and international recognition. Rueff’s influence extended beyond Monaco, with a distinguished career in France, the League of Nations, Banque de France, Sciences Po Paris, the United Nations, and the European Coal and Steel Community.

The exhibition features new documents from the Rueff collection housed at the French National Archives, SCADA, Archives of the Prince’s Palace, Audiovisual Institute of Monaco, Monaco Multimedia Library, and personal items from Jacques Rueff’s daughter.

An in-depth exploration of the exhibition’s themes by Michaël Bloche will be featured in the December issue of the Annales Monegasques.
